Georgia State Drops Regular Season Opener to Toledo 74-48

Georgia State Women’s Basketball fell to the Toledo Rockets in their regular-season opener by a score of 74-48 Tuesday. Despite strong efforts by Taylor Henderson (13 pts, 3 rebounds, 4 assists) and Jada Lewis (12 pts, 2 rebounds, 2 steals), the Panthers couldn’t overcome a lackluster defensive performance.

The Rockets outrebounded the Panthers by a staggering margin, dominating the boards to the tune of 47 rebounds versus Georgia State’s 22. The Panthers managed a mere 30% from the field with Kennedy Powell (2pts, 1 block) being the only Georgia State player to shoot greater than 50% on the night with her single score. Toledo owned the lane with 48 points inside, while the Panthers managed only 6 in the paint.

The youth of this Panthers team was evident in a lopsided performance; however freshmen Kamryn Dziak and Taylor Henderson each made strong regular-season debuts in their own right. Dziak contributed a team-high four three-pointers, while Henderson led the team in scoring and assists. Senior center Shaquanda Miller-McCray (7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1 steal) dominated the Panthers’ defensive efforts but fouled out late in the game with 1:24, giving Toledo two free points from the free throw line.

The Panthers, who returned just four members of the highly-successful 2018-2019 squad, will host Florida International on November 11th at 1pm in the GSU Sports Arena.
