Georgia State Faces Tough Slate With 14-Team Sun Belt Schedule Release

Georgia State is fresh off their third straight bowl appearance and a new program-best 8 wins in the 2021 season, and it’s clear they’ll have their work cut out for them if they add that all-elusive Sun Belt championship to the trophy case after the conference released their full 2022 schedule this morning. In what was the hot-ticket item of speculation after a lot of back-and-forth lawyering, the conference has released a schedule with all four of the new additions after conference realignment – JMU from the FCS ranks and Marshall, Old Dominion and Southern Miss from Conference USA.

The highlight of the conference schedule for the Panthers is the two weekday matchups set to be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks. Georgia State will host a national TV game for the third year running when Coastal Carolina comes to Center Parc Stadium on THERSday, September 22nd, in a game which will also serve as each team’s conference opener. And the Panthers will head up the mountain to Boone to face the four-time defending Sun Belt East champions Appalachian State on Wednesday, October 19th. This will be the program’s second time playing on a Wednesday night, after opening the 2014 college football season on Wednesday, August 27th with a dramatic 38-37 win over FCS Abilene Christian.

The Panthers will get a chance to get acquainted or re-acquainted with all of the new Sun Belt schools, as all four are on the schedule in 2022. Georgia State is 0-3 all-time against the Monarchs of Old Dominion, but they’ll have the chance to host them in Center Parc Stadium for the first time when October 29th rolls around. The Panthers also met James Madison in the schools’ old CAA days together, with the Dukes winning the only matchup 28-21 in 2012. Georgia State will have a chance for revenge when they head back to Bridgeforth Stadium on November 19th.

Southern Miss and Marshall will be new matchups for the Panthers and they’ll be treated to each school’s form of Southern hospitality in road games in the final month of the 2022 season. State will travel to Hattiesburg and face the Golden Eagles of USM on November 5th and finish off the regular season with a trip to Huntington, WV, and a date with the Thundering Herd of Marshall.

The annual rivalry game with That School Down South moves earlier in the schedule once more, as the Panthers will host Georgia Southern in Atlanta on October 9th. Senior Day will take place when GSU hosts ULM in their final home game of the season on November 12th.

The conference schedule represents a change, as Georgia State will now face just two teams from the Sun Belt West Division while games against the four other Sun Belt East teams will now comprise the majority of their 8 conference games each season. The conference slate joins with the previously known non-conference schedule, leaving the full 12-game season as follows:
