Panthers Roll in Opener, Earn Coach Lanier First Victory at GSU

The Georgia State Panthers (1-0) dug in on defense to open the Rob Lanier era in strong fashion, beating the Brewton-Parker Barons (3-2) 104-35 in their first regular season game of the 2019-20 season. The Panthers opened up on a 19-2 run and never looked back, led by suffocating defense – holding the Barons to 22% shooting and forcing 29 turnovers. John Allen led Brewton-Parker with 10 points, shooting 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Damon Wilson led the way for Georgia State on offense with 22 points, adding seven rebounds and three steals. Nelson Phillips added 17 of his own on 7-of-12 shooting, 3-of-5 from 3. The Panthers dominated on the glass, leading the rebound tally 55-31, with 23 of those on the offensive end. Drawing a distinction between tonight’s game and the exhibition versus Point, Coach Lanier praised the discipline and effort of his team, saying, “We did some things that will translate for us as we continue to grow and try to become the team we want to be.”

The Panthers are in action again on Saturday, going on the road for the first time of the year to face College of Charleston. Tip goes from TD Arena at 2pm Eastern.
