Women's Basketball Breaks 17-year Postseason Drought

Georgia State’s women’s basketball team has accepted an invitation to the 2019 Postseason Women’s Basketball Invitational. The Panthers will open the tournament by visiting the University of North Alabama on Thursday, March 21 at 7:20pm. This postseason appearance will be the first for the team since the 2002-2003 season, when the Panthers faced Duke in the opening round of the NCAA Women’s tournament.

The Panthers finished the 2018-19 season with a regular season record of 17-12. They last finished a regular season with 17 wins in 2003-2004, making this season their most successful in the past 16 years.

The Women’s Basketball Invitational is a merit-based tournament, with selection based on strength of schedule and overall record. Higher-seeded teams host in the opening round, while visiting teams receive $7,000 for first and second-round games and $9,000 for semifinal and final games to help cover travel and lodging expenses.

The Panthers are joined in this year’s tournament by conference foes Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina, although the Mountaineers and Chanticleers are placed on the opposing side of the bracket. Georgia State will not face either team unless they advance to the final.

Previous WBI champions include Appalachian State (2010) and Louisiana (2015, 2016).
