The Panthers handled Carver College and cruised to a 122-57 win Friday afternoon. Virtually the entire roster got meaningful play time, with every player that checked in scoring at least 2 points. Georgia State came within 1 point of tying the school’s single-game scoring record set in the regular season opener during the 4OT win over Georgia Tech.

Freshman guard Evan Johnson led the way for the Panthers with a career-high 20 points and was joined by six other Panthers that also scored in double figures. Today’s game ties the school record for players scoring in double figures set in 2003. Junior guard Justin Roberts finished with 14 points and 10 assists, marking his first double-double of the season.

Georgia State head coach Rob Lanier credited his bench with executing on their game plan and expounded on the importance of building confidence through that execution. “I think it’s important for the young guys to see the ball go into the basket a couple of times.” said Coach Lanier in his postgame remarks. He continued, “Those things mean a lot to young people so it’s good to feel that experience.”

On Evan Johnson’s career day, Coach Lanier had plenty of praise for his young guard, saying, “We trust him. We played a 4OT game to start the season and he was right in the middle of it.” Johnson entered the game averaging 7.8 ppg and shooting a team-high 42.1% from distance. “He’s one of the better shooters I’ve ever been around in my career and he’s just scratching the surface with regard to that.” Lanier added, “He’s a really talented shot-maker. We’re not necessarily putting a lot of eggs in his basket in terms of relying on him offensively, but when he’s in the game, we don’t want him to think twice about his ability to contribute.”

Georgia State is back in action on Monday, December 21st, when they’ll host the College of Charleston Cougars. Tipoff is set for 7:00pm and can be found on ESPN+.
