Panthers Announce New Series with Georgia Tech

Georgia State Athletics announced a three-game series with Georgia Tech men’s basketball on Wednesday morning. The series could begin as early as the 2020-21 season. The first meeting of the teams has been scheduled for December 16th, 2020 and a return for the Panthers is scheduled for the following season. Georgia Tech will visit Georgia State in the 2022-23 season.

The two teams last played in an exhibition game before the 2017 basketball season, a game which the Panthers won 65-58. Proceeds from the game went to aid the victims impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

Georgia State head coach Rob Lanier is looking forward to the cross-town rivals finally meeting in regular season competition. “Both schools were in search of regional games so in that way, this series made sense for each of us” said Lanier in a press release from Georgia State Athletics. “Atlanta is clearly one of the best basketball communities in the country. To have two strong local programs engage in a series like this brings an added level of interest.”

The Yellow Jackets are the fifth out-of-conference opponent the Panthers have announced for the upcoming season, a schedule which includes the likes of Kentucky and College of Charleston. This is the second out-of-conference Georgia school the Panthers have scheduled for the fall, as they play the Mercer Bears on November 20th.
