Panthers Outrun by Mustangs, Fall 85-76 in Dallas

The Georgia State Panthers (8-4, 2-0 in Sun Belt) dropped an out-of-conference road game to the Southern Methodist University Mustangs (9-2, 0-0 in American) 85-76.  The Panthers offense got out to slow starts in both the first and second half, and ultimately couldn’t keep pace with the size and shooting of the Mustangs. The loss snapped the Panthers seven-game winning streak.

Defensively, the Panthers forced 18 turnovers and forced SMU into tough shots all night. Offensively, the team just couldn’t get anything going consistently, shooting less than 40% from the floor. The Panthers were led offensively by Kane Williams, who had 22 points and 2 assists. Corey Allen added 18 points on 4-of-11 shooting from beyond the line.  The Mustangs had four starters reach at least 15 points, with Feron Hunt and Kendric Davis leading the Mustangs with 18 apiece. Davis also led the Mustangs with 9 assists. As a team, the Mustangs assisted 21 times on the night.

Playing their third game in six days, the Panthers won’t give any excuses, but the offensive struggles could have been attributed to tired legs. They will have seven days off before they finish their out of conference slate against Middle Georgia State on December 30th. Tip is at 7pm EST from the GSU Sports Arena.
